How to Choose the Right Job or Career

Most of us were taught to use analytical methods to evaluate big decisions such as which job to take or what career to choose. These work fine, most of the time. Analytical methods do have their limitations though. They work well when there’s a choice between two alternatives where there’s a clear winner and a clear loser. These methods are not as effective when choosing between equally attractive alternatives. In this case, a more effective method to use is your intuitive intelligence.

Your intuition can provide you with information that logical methods simply can’t. While a pro and con list can lay out the details of a decision, it can miss an important factor: how you feel about it. When you use both intuition and logical means to make a career decision, you’ll make a better decision. Continue to use logical methods to gather tangible information and use your intuition to gather more intangible information.

How do you tap into your intuition?

1. One of the best ways to tap into your intuition is to make time for it everyday. This will allow you to notice the often subtle messages that intuition sends. You can do this by meditating, do yoga, taking a walk or simply sitting. The key is to clear your mind so that your intuition can communicate with you.

2. Another great way to tap into your intuition is to try on each decision, as if you’ve already made it. If you’re choosing between 2 jobs that seem equally attractive, pretend as if you chose Job A for an entire day. Pay attention to how you feel. Does it feel like a place where you can flourish? Then pretend as if you chose Job B for an entire day. How does this one feel? Repeat this for as many alternatives as you have.

This exercise will help you assess the fit of an opportunity before you accept an offer. You’ll make a better decision about which opportunity would be the most beneficial for you.

Once you learn how to incorporate both analytical and intuitive methods into your decision making process you’ll make smarter decisions about your career in less time.
